Why Your Cat Loves the Window - Coco & Harley

Why Your Cat Loves the Window

Apartment Cat Living

And why it’s more than just a nice view.

Spring has well and truly arrived, and suddenly there’s a lot more happening outside.

Birds are more active. Windows are open more often. The days are longer. And if your cat has claimed their favourite spot by the window, there’s a good reason for it.

For an indoor cat, looking outside can provide an ever-changing source of sights, sounds and movement — all without leaving the comfort of home.

A Window to the World

A Window Is More Than a View

Think about how much can happen outside one window in a day.

A bird lands on a balcony. Leaves move in the breeze. A neighbour walks past. An insect appears on the glass. The light shifts across the room.

While these things might barely register with us, they can give a curious cat plenty to observe. That makes a good window view a simple way to add variety to an indoor environment — particularly when you live in an apartment.

Everyday Enrichment

It Gives Them Something to Watch

Cats are naturally attentive to movement. Watching birds, insects and activity outside gives them an opportunity to observe what's happening around them from a safe place.

You might notice your cat becoming completely absorbed in something outside — perhaps crouching down, following movement with their eyes or even making those distinctive little chirping sounds when a bird appears.

Sometimes the best enrichment doesn't require us to do very much at all.

Think Vertically

Height Makes the View Even Better

Cats often enjoy elevated positions because they allow them to observe their surroundings while remaining comfortably out of the way.

If the windowsill isn't accessible, a stable window perch or cat tree positioned nearby can turn an otherwise unused part of your apartment into a valuable space for your cat.

And in a smaller home, making use of vertical space means you're adding something to your cat's environment without taking over yours.

Spring Sunshine

Let Them Follow the Sun

The window seat has another springtime advantage: sunshine.

As the season changes, you may notice your cat moving around the apartment throughout the day in search of warm patches of light.

There's nothing wrong with letting them enjoy a sunny nap — just make sure they can easily move into the shade or somewhere cooler whenever they choose.

A Little Spring Reminder

Make the Window Safe

With warmer weather comes the temptation to open up the apartment and let the fresh air in.

Before you do, check that flyscreens and window screens are secure and that your cat can't squeeze through gaps or access an unsafe ledge or balcony. A great view is only enriching when your cat can enjoy it safely.

Simple Enrichment

The Best Enrichment Can Be Surprisingly Simple

Creating an interesting home for an indoor cat doesn't necessarily mean filling your apartment with more toys or furniture.

Sometimes it's about making better use of what you already have. Open the curtains. Give them somewhere comfortable to sit. Let them watch the birds, follow the sunshine and keep an eye on the neighbourhood.

You might just discover your window is home to your cat's favourite show.
